Founding Story

In 1994, in the immediate aftermath of the Rwandan genocide, Sang Hoon Lee and Song Hee Lee began their humanitarian efforts in the refugee camps of Goma, Congo. After decades of service with Food for the Hungry in Kenya and Uganda, they returned to Rwanda in 2010, inspired by the resilience of the Rwandan people and guided by their faith in Christ.

In 2011, two Korean doctors, Jun Bum Park and Jiyeon Baek, visited Rwanda for the first time as medical volunteers. Moved by the immense need for accessible medical care, they put aside their internal medicine and pediatric practices to return as full-time medical missionaries. United by a shared commitment to serve, the four individuals founded Nanuri in 2015.

At that time, Rwanda was facing significant challenges in both healthcare and education. In 2010, there was approximately one doctor for every 16,000 people, which left many communities without access to essential medical services. Additionally, the quality and availability of early childhood education were limited, particularly outside major towns.

In response to these needs, Nanuri developed two parallel initiatives. In healthcare, the team laid the groundwork for what would become the Nanuri Medical Centre, providing accessible, reliable medical care to underserved communities. In the realm of education, Nanuri introduced a Korean-inspired model and founded the 2&5 Christian Academy, which was later transferred to a local church. Nanuri continued its commitment to education with Vineyard Nursery & Primary School.

What began as a modest outreach has since evolved into a steady, community-centred initiative. Today, Nanuri operates the Nanuri Medical Centre and the Vineyard School, serving thousands of patients and hundreds of children each year.

1994년, 르완다 대학살 직후 이상훈·이송희 선교사는 콩고 고마 난민 캠프에서 인도적 지원 일을 시작했습니다. 이후 케냐와 우간다에서 국제구호단체 Food for the Hungry와 함께 수십 년간 섬긴 뒤, 2010년 르완다 사람들의 놀라운 회복력과 그리스도 안에서의 믿음에 감동되어 르완다로 돌아왔습니다.

2011년, 두 명의 한국인 의사 박준범·백지연 선교사는 처음으로 의료봉사자로 르완다를 방문했습니다. 누구나 쉽게 의료 서비스를 받을 수 있는 환경이 절실하다는 사실을 깨닫고, 내과와 소아과 진료를 내려놓은 채 전임 의료선교사로 다시 르완다에 오기로 결단했습니다. 그리고 같은 마음으로 섬기기를 소망하던 네 사람은 2015년 ‘나누리’를 함께 세웠습니다.

당시 르완다는 의료와 교육 모두에서 큰 어려움을 겪고 있었습니다. 2010년 기준, 의사 한 명이 약 16,000명을 담당해야 할 정도로 의료 인력이 턱없이 부족해 많은 지역에서 기본적인 의료 서비스조차 제공되기 어려웠습니다. 또한 유아·초등 단계의 교육의 질과 접근성 역시 매우 제한적이었으며, 특히 대도시 외곽 지역은 상황이 더욱 열악했습니다.

이에 나누리는 두 가지 방향의 사역을 시작했습니다. 의료 분야에서는 소외된 이웃들이 믿고 찾을 수 있는 의료기관을 세우기 위해 ‘나누리 메디컬 센터’의 토대를 마련했습니다. 교육 분야에서는 한국식 교육 모델을 접목해 ‘2&5 크리스천 아카데미’를 설립했고, 이후 지역 교회에 운영을 이양했습니다. 그 후에도 교육 사역을 이어가며 빈야드 유치원·초등학교를 세웠습니다.

작게 시작된 이 사역은 이제 지역사회와 함께 성장하는 든든한 사역으로 자리 잡았습니다. 현재 나누리는 나누리 메디컬 센터와 빈야드 스쿨을 운영하며, 매년 수천 명의 환자와 수백 명의 어린이들을 섬기고 있습니다.
